Stop the Presses Again! More Details and the Complete Footage
Here's the complete Sinatra segment of the 1967 Kiel Opera House (St Louis) Charity Concert
Many thanks to Richard Cook, Cademon Smith, and a few others who came forward with more information- and the correct details - about this relatively newly-discovered footage.
Richard:
The full video popped up briefly online a few months back.
Distributed as 1967-02-08, which matches the Sinatraphiles listing for that date below:
1967 Kiel Opera House, St. Louis, Missouri
February 8, 1967
Teamster Charity Show
Sinatra, Dean Martin, Milton Berle, Connie Francis
Sinatra segment:
1. The Shadow of Your Smile
2. Summer Wind
3. Yes Sir, That’s My Baby
4. It Was a Very Good Year
5. My Kind of Town
6. This Is All I Ask
7. That’s Life
Sinatra’s set kicks off with a great “Shadow of Your Smile” (Frank actually starts slightly earlier, joining in off-stage at the end of Dean’s “On an Evening in Roma”) (Thanks, Richard!)
First, here’s the Sinatra segment. Unfortunately this last number, “That’s Life,” cuts off halfway through. Disappointing, but still good to have. Composer Dean Kay, who reads this Substack, and his buddy Henry Jones - the guy we save the bones for - are going to be happy to have it in any case!
And while we are on the subject - I’m feeling generous - here’s the complete concert, or, at least all 94 minutes of the event that survive. As you can see, the footage starts with Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. Not a bad way to begin!
00:00 Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass
26:00 Miton Berle announces end of the first half
27:30 Milton Berle thanks Jack Entratter (the subtitles are hysterical) and intros Harold J. Gibbons of the Teamsters, who acknowledges producer Dwight Hemion.
36:00 Milton Berle does a Mitch Miller (!) joke and introduces Connie Francis
37:00 Terrific Connie Francis segment, including a great “Will You Still Be Mine?,” Italian songs (“Al-Di-La”) and an amazing Israeli medley with “Exodus” and “Hava Na Gila.”
55:00 Milton Berle introduces Dean Martin
56:00 Dean Martin segment (I’m saving this for later!)
75:00 Milton Berle tells a few Mia jokes (Geritol and Pepsi) introducing Sinatra
76:00 Sinatra segment, starts with amazing and rare Riddle arrangement of “The Shadow of Your Smile” - I’m going to do a whole Substack on that one very soon!
94:00 footage runs out in the middle of “That’s Life.”
(Very special thanks to Elizabeth Zimmer & Dan Fortune for their expert proofing, hey!)

SLOUCHING TOWARDS BIRDLAND is a Substack newsletter by Will Friedwald. The best way to support my work is with a paid subscription, for which I am asking either $5 a month or $50 per year. Thank you for considering. (Thanks as always to Arlen Schumer for special graphics.) Word up, peace out, go forth and sin no more! (And always remember: “A man is born, but he’s no good no how, without a song.”)
Note to friends: a lot of you respond to my Substack posts here directly to me via eMail. It’s actually a lot more beneficial to me if you go to the Substack web page and put your responses down as a “comment.” This helps me “drive traffic” and all that other social media stuff. If you look a tiny bit down from this text, you will see three buttons, one of which is “comment.” Just hit that one, hey. Thanks!j
Slouching Towards Birdland (Will Friedwald's Substack) is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
What a find!!
